We've had two of them for 3 years. We finally broke it because grandma didn't want to get down on the floor and we were so busy watching the very cool set up we made that one train chugged itself over the edge of the table! lol Purchasing a replacement today. My grandsons have been loading the rack since they were three years old. While they lose interest, having the second train allows me to load and be ready for the next round. The train itself was very interesting to the two year old who could turn it on and off himself. They also like setting up the cacti to be run over by the train. We keep the playtime under an hour because of their ages but they ask to use the trains often. I wouldn't expect a toddler to stay with any one toy longer than that. My only criticism is that two loaders (racks) should be available with the train. Buy this, you won't regret it. The rack is simple to load by spreading out dominos on the floor and pushing down like a rubber stamp. It's actually oddly satisfying to do and once the kids get the knack they enjoy chooosing only one color or color patterns. When you turn the rack over some dominos will jam unless its full then you flip and load.
Actually totally easy to load the dominoes on the stacker if you do it right (my 2 year old can do it independently!). Just turn the domino stacker upside down and press over each piece. The piece slides easily into place and holds until you get the next one (see pic). Them just flip the stacked right side up and stuck it onto the train. My toddlers can work this toy by themselves and love the process both of picking up the pieces and watching the train line them up. One of our favorite toys.
This is a fun toy, especially if you and your kids/grandkids are domino racing fans. I read the other reviews that depicted problems, so my expectations weren't too high. Generally performs well, tho' occasionally bricks will get caught in the rack or the engine, or one will set down abruptly, knocking over adjacent dominoes. (Tip: Remove one domino every dozen or two in the track as it is created, to make "firebreaks" that will keep errors from knocking down an entire track prematurely.) Remember that the main point of the whole exercise is to make it easy to set up dominoes for knocking down. The most important advice in the other reviews that I learned from was not to load the cassette/rack by placing dominoes into it by hand. Instead, place the loose dominoes flat on a hard surface (e.g. floor), then press the open/bottom end of the rack down on each domino and it will pop up into the rack, pushing the other dominoes up. My 4 year old grandson can do it pretty well; it's too difficult for my 3 year old granddaughter yet, but it's a fun joint project. Probably not as good a toy for unsupervised use. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do. (Would be nice if it came with more dominoes or you could buy them separately; there are enough for two racks full.)
